Four Chilean artists approach landscape as a cultural construction, seen from the distance of Berlin.
Miradas a Chile / Sichtweisen auf Chile begins with a deceptively simple question: what do we understand by landscape? Who constructs a landscape, what transforms it, and how are territories shaped not only physically but through the ways they have been observed, classified, mapped, named, and organised?
Curated by Alejandra Atalah, the exhibition brings together four Chilean artistic positions in an imaginary journey across Chile. Rather than representing the country through a single image or geographical narrative, it approaches landscape as a cultural construction shaped by memory, distance, personal experience, technological mediation, and historical ways of seeing. A landscape is never entirely neutral: what is seen is conditioned by maps and borders, images and archives, political histories, systems of classification, collective narratives, and private memory.
Looking from elsewhere
The exhibition asks what happens when these landscapes are viewed from another place. For people living between countries, cultures, and geographical references, looking back at a territory involves both recognition and estrangement. Distance sharpens certain memories while erasing others, and can turn familiar ground into an image charged with longing, political meaning, or uncertainty.
Across painting, photography, sound, installation, and research-based practices, the four artists work with landscape as something continuously produced — through the relationship between bodies and territories, through movement and migration, and through the images societies make in order to understand the spaces they inhabit. Claudia Adriazola Rodríguez approaches Chilean landscape through pictorial materiality and recollection; Bruno Giliberto combines large-format analogue photography, field sound recordings, and archival research; Gonzalo Reyes Araos works between painting, sculpture, and installation to examine how digital systems mediate our relation to nature; and Fede Taus paints from family archives and found images to test the boundary between document, fiction, and interpretation.
Seen from Berlin, Chile is at once present and distant — a territory remembered, reconstructed, and interpreted. Miradas a Chile proposes no definitive portrait of the country. It opens a space in which several ways of seeing coexist, and in which everyone has the right to look, and to recognise themselves as part of a territory, or not to.
