An exhibition-as-book in which the chapters of a publication become collaborative, multivocal works.
What happens when a book leaves the page and becomes a space to inhabit? Making Places Inbetween answers that question in an unusual form: an exhibition-as-book, in which the chapters of a publication are turned into collaborative, multivocal works. Moving between Italy, France, and Chile, it gathers narratives of placemaking shaped by migration, border regimes, memory, and resistance.
The project develops from a book by the artist and researcher Melanie Garland, and approaches migration not as a series of isolated movements but as a constellation of interconnected experiences. Taking its cue from the oceans that connect the sites the research passes through, the exhibition proposes an archipelagic perspective: stories, encounters, and forms of solidarity surface across geographical borders, linking communities and places through water, memory, and movement.
Working at the intersection of art and anthropology, theory and practice, the exhibition is as concerned with method as with material. It asks how migration can be researched and represented without reducing complex experiences to fixed narratives. Sound and art installations, photography, collective listening, workshops, and artistic activations are the means by which the book expands into the physical space of Bardo Projektraum.
Rather than presenting research as something finished, Making Places Inbetween holds open a space for encounter and exchange. Visitors move between stories and methodologies, and are invited to consider how places are created, inhabited, and transformed by communities on the move. The book features conversations with Elizabeth Andrade, Adolfo Estalella, Davide Franceschini, Inti Gallardo, Melanie Garland, hn. lyonga, Carla J. Maier, Cristian Ochoa, Kathy O’Hare, and Myriam Perrot.
Public programme
- Thursday 17 September, from 18:00 — Book launch and vernissage. At 19:00 a book conversation with hn. lyonga, Melanie Garland, and collaborators; at 20:00 a collective listening session and waterscape performance, with the release of the vinyl.
- Saturday 19 September, 15:00–17:30 — Multimodal workshop, for people working between art and anthropology, aesthetics and ethics, theory and practice. Free, places limited, registration by 14 September.
- Sunday 20 September, 14:00–18:00 — Artwork activations. Storytelling, performative guided tours, listening experiences, and conversations with artists and curators. Drop in; no registration.
- Thursday 24 September, from 18:00 — Finissage, with a collective vinyl listening session at 19:30.
Opening hours are Wednesday to Saturday, 14:00–18:00. Admission is free.
